What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They allow a site to remember information between page visits, such as your preferences or whether you have already seen a notice. Some are removed when you close the browser; others remain for a set period.
A cookie is stored by the browser you are using, and it belongs to one site at a time. That is why clearing cookies in one browser will not affect another browser or another device where you have visited the same address.
Alongside cookies, a site may use similar storage such as local storage to remember a small setting. Where that wording appears in the sections below, the same control options apply: both are managed through your browser settings, and both are described here for completeness.
Strictly necessary cookies
Required for the site to work
These cookies are required for the website to function, including security features and basic navigation. They do not track you across other websites and cannot usually be switched off through the site itself.
In practice this covers the things that keep a visit working: remembering the choices you make on a form while you fill it in, and protecting the site against requests that are not coming from a real visitor. None of that information is used to build a profile of you for advertising.
Because these cookies are part of how the pages load and how forms behave, blocking them through the browser is likely to stop some parts of the site from working properly. If you block them and something looks broken, allowing them again for fretworkguitar.co.uk should restore normal behaviour.
Analytics cookies
Analytics cookies, where used, record how visitors move through the site: which pages are opened, how long a visit lasts, and where visitors arrived from. The information is aggregated and used to improve the site. It is not used to identify you personally.
Aggregated means the numbers are read as totals and patterns rather than as individual visits: which guides are read most often, where readers leave a page early, and which route through the pages tends to lead to an enquiry. Those patterns tell us which lesson pages need clearer wording and which practice guides are worth expanding.
Third-party cookies
Some pages may include content or tools provided by third parties, which can set their own cookies. Those cookies are controlled by the relevant provider and are subject to that provider's policy rather than this one.
An embedded video, for example, is usually served from the platform that hosts it, and that platform may set cookies when the player loads. Because the provider decides how its cookies behave, this notice cannot list every cookie it may set. The provider's own cookie notice is the dependable place to look, and it is linked from the page where the embed appears.
If you would rather a third-party embed did not load at all, most browsers can block that kind of content by default or per site. The pages here will still be readable without it.
Managing cookies
You can delete or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may affect how the site works. Browser help pages explain how to review and remove stored cookies for each major browser.
-
Step one
Open your browser settings and find the section for privacy or site data. Most browsers list stored cookies under a menu named for privacy, content settings or site data.
-
Step two
Search the list for fretworkguitar.co.uk to see what is stored for this site. You can remove everything here, or leave the necessary items in place.
-
Step three
Reload the site and check that pages and forms still behave as expected. If something breaks, allow cookies for this site again.
Every mainstream browser keeps its own instructions in a help section, including how to clear cookies when you close the window and how to allow an exception for a single address. Which one you use makes no difference to the choices available here.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated if the cookies used on the site change. The version published on this page is the current one.
Material changes are reflected in the wording above, so the section that changed always describes what the site does now. If a new tool is added to the pages and it sets its own cookies, the third-party section is where that is explained.
